Tips, answers and how to reach us.
How do I start a story?
Tap Start a new story on the home screen and start typing. Not sure what to write? Tap one of the Need an idea? suggestions and watch a story type itself.
How do I add a character?
Just name them. “A knight named Walter” or “Sam and his dog Frank” brings them on stage, each in their own marker color. Characters also show up when you mention them, like “a giant robot appeared.”
What can characters do?
Over 40 moves, including run, jump, flip, punch, kick, dance, hug, wave, cast spells, breathe fire and fall asleep. Put words in quotes for a speech bubble. Feelings like happy, scared, angry or dizzy show on their faces. Places like a castle, city, forest, beach or outer space change the scenery, and so do sunsets, night, rain and snow.
How do I change how a character looks?
Tap the character's name above the notebook. You can pick their marker color, choose what they are (a kid, giant, dragon, robot, alien, ghost, dog and more) and dress them up with hats, capes, wings and other outfits. The new look follows them through the whole story.
How do I watch my whole story?
Tap Play. The theater plays your story from the beginning with subtitles. Tap the speed button to switch between normal, faster and slower.
How do I switch to the chalkboard or blueprint look?
In the studio, tap the round stage style button next to Play. Each tap switches between sketchbook, chalkboard and blueprint.
What is the Smart Director?
An optional helper that's off until you turn it on in Settings (the button at the top right of the home screen). On iPhones and iPads with Apple Intelligence, and Android phones that support Gemini Nano, it uses an on-device model to understand trickier sentences. If your device can't run it, the switch turns itself back off and tells you why. On Android, turning it on also lets Google's ML Kit send Google basic diagnostics; see our privacy policy. Without it, the app still acts out your stories.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Everything works offline. If you turn on the Smart Director on Android, its model may need a one-time download first, which Android handles in the background.
Where are my stories saved? How do I delete one?
Stories are saved on your device only. To delete one, tap the ··· button on the story in your shelf and choose Delete. Deleting the app deletes all of its stories, so keep it installed if you want to keep them. Stories are included in your device backup (iCloud on iPhone and iPad, Google backup on Android) if you use one.
Is it OK for kids?
Yes. It has no ads, no accounts, no chat and no web browsing, and it's rated 4+ on the App Store. The only fighting is cartoon “POW!” stuff. Read our privacy policy for the details.
My sentence didn't do what I expected.
The director understands a lot, but not everything yet. Short sentences with one or two actions work best, and it helps to name characters before they do things. If a sentence should have worked, email it to us. Every one we get makes the app smarter.
Still stuck?
Email support@stickfigurestorytime.com. Tell us which device you're using and, if something went wrong, the sentence that caused it. We read every message.
